Helping a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for anxiety

If you have a child, family member, or loved one who is suffering from an anxiety disorder, you may be feeling helpless as to what you can do for them. You may feel frustrated because there has been a decline in his or her academic or occupational performance. You may feel hurt because your loved one is isolating him or herself from you. You may feel confused as to why he or she is exhibiting unusual behaviors, such as refusing to leave the house, participating in repetitive behaviors, or experiencing chronic periods of panic attacks. If the symptoms that your loved one is experiencing has come to your attention, then it is likely that they are severe enough to be impacting his or her ability to fully function, and it might be beneficial to work with him or her towards getting any help necessary.

While anxiety disorders are serious, they are also very treatable. One of the best things that you can do for your loved one is to help him or her find a treatment center that can successfully help him or her in overcoming the existing symptoms of anxiety. Some examples of things that are beneficial to remember when guiding your loved one towards getting treatment include:

  • Take the time to learn about anxiety disorders so that you can get an idea of what he or she is going through
  • Do not assume what your loved one needs, ask him or her
  • Do not say things like “calm down” or “just relax” because that will most likely only serve to increase his or her anxiety
  • Do not do things for your loved one, even if he or she asks you to, because it can create feelings of dependency that can prolong the anxiety instead of helping to alleviate it

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for anxiety at Oasis Behavioral Health Hospital in Chandler, AZ

If you are struggling with an anxiety disorder, you are likely feeling concerned about what your future looks like. Or, if you have a child who has an anxiety disorder, you are likely to be experiencing concern as to what changes can be made in order for him or her to have a bright future. These concerns are completely justified because, if left untreated, the symptoms of anxiety disorders will continue to worsen over time. Some people may even turn to drugs or alcohol in order to self-medicate the symptoms of their anxiety, which can cause further complications.

Both acute inpatient treatment and residential treatment centers have shown to be successful at treating adolescents and adults who are struggling with anxiety disorders. Our hospitals can help individuals address the symptoms of the anxiety disorder they are suffering from while also confronting any additional behavioral or mental health concerns that may exist. By receiving treatment in a residential center or in an inpatient setting, people are provided with an opportunity to step away from the routines of their daily lives that are adding to the severity of their anxiety symptoms and focus solely on getting well. Through the use of a variety of therapeutic approaches, both inpatient and residential centers can help you or your loved one reach the goals he or she needs to in order to overcome their symptoms of anxiety.

Types of Treatment

Types of anxiety treatment offered at Oasis Behavioral Health Hospital in Chandler, AZ

When patients first arrive at our anxiety treatment center, they will undergo a thorough evaluation in order to gain an understanding of their unique needs and concerns. By doing this, we are able to determine the most appropriate level of care that will meet those needs and address those concerns. We have an acute inpatient hospital that has been designed for adolescents between the ages of 11 and 17, and adults aged 18 and older who are in need of a safe, caring, and secure environment in order to find stabilization and recovery.

In addition to our inpatient center, we also offer residential treatment for adolescents aged 11-17. This program is designed specifically to meet the needs of children and adolescents who are struggling with emotional, behavioral, and substance abuse issues.

Through the use of a variety of evidenced-based therapeutic practices and experiential programming options, in combination with the implementation of appropriate psychotropic medication, we can help guide you or your loved one down the path for lasting recovery.

Treatment approaches at our acute inpatient center can include:

Medication: As part of providing the most thorough care possible, medications may be used in addition to therapy in order to help patients who are dealing with anxiety. While being treated in our inpatient hospital, you will see a provider daily for medication management in order to ensure its effectiveness and to make any changes that may be necessary.

Group therapy: Because our inpatient program is group-focused, we hold various group sessions multiple times each day that cover a variety of different topics. Some of these groups include community, social services, recreation, and behavioral health groups. We also hold interactive sessions that are designed to enhance our clients’ functioning levels in certain key areas of their lives that may have been previously ignored as a result of psychiatric conditions or prolonged drug use. These sessions may include social, emotional, and physical well-being, daily living skills, vocational development, adult education opportunities, spirituality, sexuality, and recreation and leisure.

Family therapy: While being treated on an inpatient basis, patients will have at least one family therapy session where they can process through the varying emotions that may have resulted from the presence of an anxiety disorder. We also provide educational sessions every Monday night for the family members of patients being treated in our center.

Treatment approaches at our residential treatment center can include:

Medication: Children and adolescents who are a part of our residential treatment program will meet with a psychiatrist every two weeks in order to provide medication management. Part of successfully treating anxiety disorders often times comes in the form of psychotropic medications, but all medication decisions will be made by you and your child’s treatment team together.

Daily school: All of the patients enrolled in our residential program attend school Monday through Friday for at least three hours each day. Our onsite school, Oasis Recovery School, is fully accredited and offers individualized education plans for each student. All of our teachers hold certifications in special education and work with our patients to catch up on skills, recover lost credits, and graduate on time.

Individual therapy: The patients at our residential treatment center meet with a therapist on a one-to-one basis for individual therapy sessions at least once each week. This time is designed for children and adolescents to be provided with a confidential environment to process through the experiences they are having throughout the course of treatment.

Family therapy: Family therapy sessions are held at a minimum of once every two weeks and is meant to be a time for patients and their family members to come together to explore how treatment is going for the patient, as well as to address any negative effects that the disorder may have had on the family as a whole. Family members of patients at our residential treatment center are also encouraged to attend the Monday night family education sessions.

Group therapy: Group therapy sessions are held on a daily basis and include process groups, goal-setting groups, coping skills groups, and substance abuse groups for those who are in the substance abuse program.

Experiential methods: We provide our patients with a number of experiential programming options in addition to the traditional therapeutic methods. These options include:

  • Art
  • Gym
  • Daily recreation
  • Outside time
  • Talking circles
  • Bible studies
