While it is developmentally normal for children to participate in oppositional behaviors as they are growing up, there are some children who take it to another level. These children will display behaviors that go beyond simply testing limits or seeking independence. These children will consistently defy authority figures and act out in ways with the sole purpose of annoying others. When children present with these more extreme behaviors of defiance, where the patterns of behavior are persistently disobedient and hostile, it is possible that they are suffering from oppositional defiant disorder (ODD).

At our hospital, we recognize the challenges that having a child with ODD can present and we understand how overwhelming it can be. We offer intensive programming that has been designed to meet the needs of children who are struggling with this disruptive disorder. Through our acute inpatient hospital and our residential treatment center, we are able to serve the needs of children who have oppositional defiant disorder in a safe and secure environment. Our newly renovated hospital provides patients with a clean, modern feel as they work towards successfully overcoming their challenges. You do not have to continue dealing with your child’s oppositional and defiant behaviors alone. We are here to help.

Helping a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for ODD

If your child has oppositional defiant disorder, you are likely to be feeling an overwhelming mixture of emotions. You may be feeling frustrated, angry, hopeless, and helpless. It is not uncommon for parents who have children with ODD to feel as though they must be at fault in some way because they are unable to control their child’s behaviors. But you should not blame yourself. Once you understand the nature of the disorder, you may begin to feel a sense of peace in the fact that you are not alone and that there are countless other families who are struggling with the same issues that you are.

If you are concerned about the severity of your child’s behaviors, but are not completely sure if they are severe enough to warrant a diagnosis of oppositional defiant disorder, here are some examples that may be indicative of the presence of ODD:

  • Violent temper tantrums that seem to come suddenly and without provocation
  • Chronically fighting with peers, physically and/or verbally
  • Actively seeking out revenge, even when not warranted
  • Purposely destroying friendships
  • Blatantly refusing to follow rules
  • Refusing to compromise
  • Deliberately annoying or upsetting people

If any of these symptoms are present in your child, it is time to seek out professional help. The earlier that an intervention occurs the more likely your child is to successfully change his or her negative behavior patterns. Without treatment, the consequences of your child’s behaviors can be detrimental to his or her future.

In doing so, we are able to determine the most appropriate level of care that will meet the needs specific to each child. We have an acute inpatient hospitalization program that has been designed for adolescents aged 11-17 who are in need of a secure environment in order to find stabilization and recovery.

In addition to our inpatient treatment center, we also offer a residential treatment center for adolescents between the ages of 11 and 17. This treatment center is designed specifically to meet the needs of children and adolescents who are struggling with emotional, behavioral, and substance abuse problems, including the specific issues that are a part of oppositional defiant disorder.

Through the use of a variety of evidenced-based therapeutic practices and experiential programming options, the staff at our hospital for ODD can help guide your child down the path for successful recovery.

Treatment approaches for our acute inpatient treatment center can include:

Medication: While being treated in our acute inpatient hospital, your child will see a provider daily for medication management in order to ensure its effectiveness and to make any changes that may be necessary.

Group therapy: Our inpatient treatment center is group-focused and so we hold various group sessions multiple times every day that cover a variety of topics. We also provide additional sessions that are designed to enhance our patients’ functioning levels in certain key areas of their lives that may have been previously ignored as a result their psychiatric conditions. These sessions may include physical, emotional, and social well-being, daily living skills, recreation, and spirituality.

Family therapy: While being treated on an inpatient basis, patients will have at least one family therapy session where they are given the opportunity to process through the varying emotions that may have resulted from the presence of oppositional defiant disorder, as well as to work towards repairing any relationships that may need healing.

At our hospital for oppositional defiant disorder, we also provide education sessions every Monday night for the family members of patients being treated at our treatment center.

Treatment approaches for our residential treatment center can include:

Medication: Children and adolescents who take part in our residential treatment center will meet with a psychiatrist at least once every two weeks in order to provide medication management. Part of successfully treating ODD may come in the form of psychotropic medications, but you and your child’s treatment team will make all decisions regarding medication together.

Daily school: All of the children enrolled in our residential program attend school Monday through Friday for at least three hours each day. Our onsite school, Oasis Recovery School, is a fully accredited program and offers individualized education plans for each child. All of our teachers hold certification in special education and work with the children to maintain the same academic status as their peers, catch up on skills, recover lost credits, and graduate on time.

Individual therapy: The children in our residential treatment center meet one-on-one with a therapist for individual therapy sessions at least once each week. This time is designed for them to have an outlet in order to process through the experiences they are having throughout the course of treatment and confront any concerns that they may have.

Family therapy: Family sessions are held at least once every two weeks and are meant to be a time for patients and their family members to come together to explore how the patient’s treatment is progressing and to address any negative effects that the disorder may have had on the family unit.

Family members of patients in our residential treatment center are also encouraged to attend our Monday night family education sessions.

Group therapy: Group sessions are held on a daily basis and include process groups, goal-setting groups, coping skills groups, and substance abuse groups for those who are in the substance abuse program.

Experiential methods: In additional to the traditional therapeutic methods, we provide our patients with a number of experiential programming options. These options include art, gym, daily recreation, talking circles, and Bible study.
